Press Release
Captain Glenn Abrams
Atlantic City Police Department
June 19, 2007

On Monday June 18, 2007 at approximately 3:00 pm Atlantic City Police Lt. Michael McMenamin was traveling on Mill Road in Northfield when he spotted a vehicle that was being sought for a shooting over the weekend. Off duty Police Officer William Moore was traveling home with friends on Sunday morning after celebrating a birthday. A vehicle, a silver Jeep Grand Cherokee with after market wheel covers, cut Officer Moore's car off and was driving erratically for approximately 10 blocks down Atlantic Avenue. Officer Moore identified himself as an Atlantic City Police Officer. The driver yelled obscenities that he also had a shield and then ran a red light at Albany Avenue and nearly striking an oncoming vehicle. As Officer Moore began to dial the phone to call for the Police he observed the Jeep follow him to Bartram Avenue. As occupants of Officer Moore's car were exiting the Jeep pulled up to Officer Moore's vehicle. Suddenly the male driver of the Jeep, later identified as Miguel Ruiz, fired a gun through the sun roof of his vehicle and sped away. The officer called for back up but lost the car before marked police cars arrived.

On Monday morning after an 11:00am staff meeting Lt. McMenamin received limited information regarding the wanted male and vehicle. Lt. McMenamin observed a vehicle matching the wanted vehicle in Northfield which was parked on the lawn of a residential home with a "For Sale" sign on it. Lt. McMenamin circled the block and took a closer look at the vehicle. After 28 years on the job the Lieutenant called for back up and positioned himself at a safe distance and kept the vehicle under surveillance. The Northfield Police, Officer Moore and Det. Ed Riegel from the Atlantic City Police Department arrived on scene. It was the vehicle. The vehicle was towed the the Atlantic City Police Tow Lot.

The investigation continued and within hours the shooter was in custody and the gun recovered. It was a job well done. Lt. McMenamin was credited the arrest. He acted on his instincts and his years of experience as a street cop.

As Deputy Chief Henry White stated "It was good old fashioned police work".
